Kate of Poverty Jane

Posted on Friday, January 1, 2010 in Cloth Diaper

Im a FULL FULL time mommy and milk maker and loving wife to 5 wonderful boys and 1 neato little girl and one extremely wonderful man. Our oldest (14) to the youngest (1).
My husband and I have a very simple life philosophy, and that is to get back to basics as much as we can. We live, and are currently developing as many features as we can, to live completely off the land. We own a wood boiler for heat in the home, pump water from our well, we use solar power to run electricity and have an enormous garden filled with heirloom plants and currently working towards an all year around greenhouse. We hunt for our meat and raise our own livestock and harvest our own eggs and hang our laundry in the sun to dry. Not to mention my husband mills all the wood we need to create all these projects on our mill from the trees that grow on our land! He has been working on many things, but trying to finish our 150 year old barn conversion that we call “home”. We are looking into a greenhouse and making a root cellar. Its fun! But lots of work! And its work that we have happily chosen to do because we believe in a way of life that is completely disappearing from our existence. (more…)

Cloth Pad Care

Posted on Saturday, December 26, 2009 in Cloth Pad

Its really easy to care for cloth pads. Buy a medium size pail preferably with a lid or you can make your own lid with anything big enough to cover the pail.

Soaking Method
1. Fill your pail with cold water and you can start soaking your used pads in there.
2. Change the water whenever you can or at least once a day to avoid bacteria growth. Always cover your pail with a lid and this helps to prevent bacteria growth. I change the water 2-3 times a day. (more…)

Mosquito Trap

Posted on Saturday, December 26, 2009 in Baby Basics

Joanne says:
This product can cover a large living area but for different rooms and levels, we suggest a separate device. Or you may alternate the location where you place the device. The proper placement of this product is important to ensure it is at its most effective. Make sure it is away from wind or fan when this is turned on as it will deter mosquito from flying around it. Always place this device at least 2 meters from the ground and it will work best when there is least human interaction hence, this is best used when no one is at home or during the night when everyone is sleeping. A good trick is to use this in your bed room 2 hours before bed time when the room is not occupied by anyone, this is to ensure mosquitos are not distracted by the multiple source of carbon dioxide. Having said this, this product is very safe and can be used all night or day in a room with baby or adult. (more…)

Woolen Diaper Covers – Jeannette Almstrøm

Posted on Saturday, December 26, 2009 in Cloth Diaper

When I gave birth to my second child twenty years ago, I was given a present that struck me as quite odd. I had one year earlier moved from Sweden to Denmark, and, as a nurse at that time, had no knowledge of anything other than disposable diapers. We were all so engrossed in the “use-and-throw-away” mentality.

The gift I received was a woolen panty, knitted by my grandmotherly neighbor, for my baby. (more…)

Wool, Fleece or Pul Cover

Posted on Friday, December 25, 2009 in Cloth Diaper

Natural wool material is absolutely amazing. Wool can absorb liquid  up to 30% of its own weight before it will start leaking through, so it is an absolute great diaper cover cum soaker. Some wool pants have double layers which would give added protection for babies who are heavy wetter. Wool is extremely breathable and how do we know that? Just pull the frabic and you can see through the wool from the holes on it. Using a breathable diaper cover keeps the temperature lower inside the diaper, which is more comfortable for the child and reduces diaper rash issues. (more…)

Your baby’s feet

Posted on Friday, December 25, 2009 in Baby Basics

The following comments and observations are attributed to…
Dr. Lisa C. Moore
Doctor of Chiropractic Medicine

“During foot development, it is important for bones, muscles, blood vessels and nerves to have room to grow without restriction.

“As the beginning walker stands up and takes the first tentative steps, the muscles of the feet grip the floor and the toes separate to help the child have better balance and control. If feet are confined within a rigid shoe, the toes cannot operate in this way, nor can the muscles of the foot and ankle develop the strength necessary to hold her upright. (more…)
